Glutaraldehyde is a saturated dialdehyde – 1.5 pentanediol. In an aqueous solution its pH is acid and is not a sporicide. It has a strong biocide action as a bactericide, virucide, fungicide and sporicide. Its activity is due to the alquilation of the sulfidryl, hydroxyl, carboxyl and amino groups of the microorganisms altering their DNA, RNA and protein synthesis.
The spore activity is due to the fact that the glutaraldehyde reacts
with the spore`s surface, provoking the hardening of the external
layers and the spore`s death.
